SA Solar Technology receives R543 million fundingFunding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) will be used to build a production facility in Paarl in the Western Cape where Thin Film Solar Technology SA will produce photovoltaic (PV) modules for emission free solar electricity.

This groundbreaking solar technology is the result of over thirteen years of research by the University of Johannesburg’s professor Vivian Alberts. Unlike standard solar panels that contain a three hundred and fifty micron thick silicon layer, Alberts’ panels make use of copper, indium, gallium, sulphur and selenium.

This revolutionarily thin panel is approximately five microns thick, compared with human hair which is twenty microns thick, and is dramatically lower in cost to produce than the standard solar panels. The elements used are all semi-conductors making this technology more effective in attracting heat.

The new plant will provide PV systems to schools and clinics in rural communities where it will be more cost-effective than power grid development. Micro-sized installations for individual homes will be at competitive prices.

The plant will have a peak capacity of thirty mega-watts per annum when fully operational.
