Litter Free Campaign helps Clean the Jukskei river in AlexandraA campaign is underway to create awareness about the challenges of littering in an effort to include communities in the better management of their environment. In Alexandra the Litter Free Campaign is underway to clean the Jukskei River as part of an ongoing effort to clean and protect the environment in and around Johannesburg.

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment in conjunction with the City of Johannesburg and the Extended Public Works Programme have involved the public in becoming part of the endeavour to clean the Jukskei River. Over 30 people from the township of Alexandra were employed by the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) to help clean the river.

The campaign which was first launched by the Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Khabisi Mosunkutu in Sedibeng District Municipality is rotating in all six municipalities within the province.   The campaign then moved to Westrand and Tshwane  and in March it was launched in Metsweding and Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni Metro Executive Mayor, Lentheng Mekgwe and MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu will pass the campaign torch to City of Joburg Executive Mayor Amos Masondo . The handing over the torch is  followed by a week of intensive Litter Free programmes in the respective municipality.
