 A new social venture is being backed by the former US vice President Al Gore that aims to secure the .eco domain name. Founded by Fred Krueger and Clark Landry, the new social network Dot Eco LLC’s have stated that the fee’s received from registering will be used fund scientific initiatives and research into climate change and many other environmental issues.
"This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole," said Mr Gore. It is planned that later in 2009 Dot Eco plan to apply to ICANN, the governing body that monitors domain names. "We fully support Dot Eco in its efforts to secure the .eco top level domain through the ICANN application and look forward to working with them to promote .eco," said Mr Gore. Speaking on behalf of the Alliance for Climate Protection, Gore said “This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole.” We are yet to find out if this will end up being another we branding statistic that lines pockets or as it is intended a new domain that is useful for ecological and social purposes and help to change the environment with funding projects.
