| Poachers Steal Puppy to Lure Wild Animals into Illegal Snares | |

Not only have several dogs been reported missing, but dogs have been heard “screaming in the forest” for the past two months. Over the weekend, one lucky little dog was rescued by resident Shaun Daly. Upon hearing the sound of a puppy crying, Daly went out to have a look around. Then he made a horrifying discovery: Jasmine the dachshund was trapped in a wire cage and surrounded by bush pigs. Poachers had stolen the little dog and were using her terrified cries for help to lure the bush pigs into illegal snares. The pigs were chased off, and Jasmine was reunited with her family. “New trend” among poachers? Andrea Abbott, Everton Conservancy Chairman is very concerned. It definitely seems to be the start of a new trend among poachers because wild animals are usually attracted to loud sounds. We are doing everything we can to preserve our beautiful area but the poachers are making it extremely difficult. In the past two months, there have been several dogs reported missing. Founder of SA Community Action Network Brian Jones now suspects these dogs were taken as bait. This incident brings to light a new reason why dogs are being taken. After rescuing Jasmine, Shaun Daly has emailed residents to warn them about the danger to their pets. Residents have also been asked by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife authorities to notify them if they find any snares, and to follow up if they hear dogs. Here’s to Shaun Daly, for saving Jasmine’s life!
