Lioness Carmen reunites with her pride in South AfricaCarmen a lioness born sixteen years ago in an Austrian safari park is to be reunited with her pride and three daughters Kiara, Xena and Camilla at Lionsrock, a sanctuary in Bethlehem in the Free State.

In 2007 when ten lions, including the three siblings were transferred from Austria to South Africa, Carmen remained behind as a companion for an old lioness that could not make the trip.

Two months ago the old lioness died and arrangements were made for Carmen to join the pride at Lionsrock.

This week she arrived at OR Tambo International Airport after a 12 hour road journey from Vienna to Frankfurt and a 10 hour flight to Johannesburg.  Even after this long journey she was happy to roar at those who took out their cellphones to photograph her.

Hildegard Pirker of Lionsrock said she was sure that Carmen would be recognised and accepted by her pride.

After the three hour drive to Lionsrock Carmen will remain in a feeding area next to the lions so that she can become accustomed to her surroundings where she will once again be with her daughters and the pride.
