End to bull killings seeked by Gandhi

End to bull killings seeked by Gandhi Maneka Gandhi, an Indian animal rights activist, and South African campaigners stated on Tuesday that they are currently trying to have a Zulu ritual banned that involves a group of youths killing a bull with their bare hands.

"We will ask for an urgent interdiction of this practice at the Durban High Court," said Steve Smit, a spokesperson for Animal Rights Africa.

The ritual is carried out in early December at the First Fruit Festival and is mean't to mark the young mens passage into manhood, activists have repeatedly petitioned Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini to stop the ritual to no avail.

"We've made many requests but we did not have any responses," Smit said.

The group's have had no choice but to turn to the courts after Gandhi wrote to President Jacob Zuma, who is Zulu, last month to ask him to get the rituals stopped.
"While I respect culture, this bull-killing ritual causes extreme suffering to an innocent creature and has no place in the modern world," Gandhi said in the letter written on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

In the ritual, 20 to 40 young men push the bull onto the ground, stab its eyes, pull out its tongue, twist its genitals and then beat it to death, Smit said.

and here go the bunnyhugging greenies whacking on about animal issues when supermarkets are filled with meat, when our oceans are being trashed by industrial fishing, when GM crops are displacing the amazon to make 'bioplastics' and 'biofuels' so we can carry on as normal and people instead hack on about one cow that dies a nasty death. What about the thousands that die equally nasty deaths every day? Balance people. Focus. Get with the programme.
And if you want to change things, dont moan here, learn Zulu and get involved where you can make a change instead of moaning. Just like the bunnyhuggers moaning about the Robben island rabbits. Get real people.

That is why this country is so stuffed up with bullshit like this i will do the same to the guys who participate in this and see how they feel. A country is judged by the way you treat your animals. That is why most of this country has no compassion sympathy towards their fellow man and worst of all no conscience.Has anyone ever thought as to what this might do to their peanut sized brains and how it might effect them in their lives- probably not i rest my case it is like farting against thunder.

Reflects a lot more about the SA man!

If you have learned to torture an animal to prove your manhood you are probably the same guy who will also rape and hit women and kids to prove your manhood one day? If you have to kill an animal for culture I am sure you can do it in another way... what will the torture prove more? Yes, we all eat meat and yes, we have to kill animals for food. But whatever your explanation of civilized is not the case...it is about respect and humanity to another creature created by the same God who created you!

The importance of ritual for community identity, initiation, rites of passage and healing.
written by Paul Terrell , November 24, 2009
It is so easy to make judgements.Do Vincent, Glen James and Tessa live in countries where there is ritual sacrifice of humans on the roads every day? There is no need for it. We choose it. Cars can be manufactured to have a top speed of 30mph and have rubber bags around them at the same height. We choose to sacrifice humans. If any of you pay taxes to a government that spends money on arms manufacture or war you are hypochrites. So, please, save your well meaning, but misguided sentiments for something under your noses. The civilised ( spiritually connected)peoples on this planet often connect with spirit through the energy released through death of an animal. ( by the way you had better stop eating meat because the western way of raising and slaughtering cattle, sheep and chickens is extreme torture for the animals). If you don't understand the value of ritual then don't judge it. Middle class sentiments have no place in spiritual ritual. When you have solved the animal torture problems in your back yard, then perhaps you would like to join these people and learn something about the power of their ritual and the respect they have for the sacrificed animal before you make hypochrites of yourselves. Without a spiritual perspective these things cannot be understood. What you mean by civilised is brainwashed into the materialist consumer trance. Wake up!

violence

violence is very present, especially in South African Society. It is common and omnipresent. violence leads no where, only destruction. will destroy an animal make you stronger ? will it make you a better person ?
in this world, we should think more about loving, caring and helping the little ones... That surely will make you stand out as a Man in this world of Violence

most rituals in the past involved some form of sacrifice, be it animal or human, but as we have become more aware and enlightened we have learned to replace the sacrificial components with acceptable symbolic gestures, isn't time this ritual was also dragged into the 21 century and changed to reflect a Zulu nation that is wise, compassionate and modern.

Good on Maneka Gandhi - how can this disgustingly cruel behaviour be allowed in this day and age?
