The campaign was launched in July and the Nampak corporate social investment committee has donated R800 000. Apple Green Holdings, an environment friendly waste management solutions specialist, are taking on the responsibility of the day to day managing of the recycling banks. “The 20 sites chosen include Nampak’s head office and the Nampak Tissue and Growthpoint offices, in Rosebank and Sandton. Some shopping centres are also earmarked. Further sites will depend on the level of success achieved by the first roll-out of the campaign,” says Nampak Recycling Blue to Green project manager Meshack Mosiya. Nampak will also benefit from this scheme by recycling materials deposited at the recycling banks, such as paper, cardboard, glass, cans etc and use them in their manufacturing processes. All the banks are marked with the material they are for, however Apple Green representatives man them to ensure the correct mterials are deposited where they should be and have no left over liquid left over in them. They are also in charge of moving the reyclable material once the bins are full from the location to the selected Nampak factory. Thus far this has all created 20 informal jobs. “Nampak Recycling decided to promote the campaign in office parks because offices generate a lot of waste that can be recycled. Secondly, office workers, who probably don’t have the means or time to recycle household waste, can now do so at work. All they need to do is bring their recycla- ble waste to work, and someone separates it and puts it in the bin,” he adds. “Recent research on the environment indi- cated that 90% of South Africans think that litter is the greatest threat facing our country. While packaging is often fingered as a serious contributor in the war against waste, particularly due to its perceived pervasiveness in the form of litter, it constitutes less than 10% of all landfill waste. In fact, builders’ waste and garden greens are the main culprits,” says Packaging Council of South Africa executive director Andrew Marthinusen.

Nampak's Recycling's Blue to Green campaign is set to have 20 strategically located sites north of Johannesburg running by the end of September. These recycling stations will be in office parks and shopping centres, the idea being office workings don't have the means or the time to recycle at home dsue to their long hours so they can bring it to work and someone will sort it and put it in the appropriate recycle bin.
