Staff from Riverside Hotel & Spa have shown a keen interest in assisting in dealing with the levels of pollution in the nearby Umgeni River. They decided to take action and attend a meeting hosted by Umvubu Service, where they were educated on the river, the ecological factors and the impact of the pollution on the river and wildlife.
Riverside road and the lower reaches of the Umgeni River is undergoing a transformation thanks to the efforts of Umvubu services, a new co-operative business that has been established to maintain the area. The last major clean up of the year took place in early November, and saw six enthusiastic Riverside staff members giving up their Saturday morning to meet at the Beachwood mangrove Nature reserve for a morning of cleaning up. The mangroves are home to many animals, these crabs and wildlife becoming endangered due to the high volumes of pollution in the water. The Riverside team managed to fill a whopping 22 bin bags with rubbish in a space of 60 minutes, consisting of copious amounts of plastic bottles, shoes, polystyrene, paint tins, and plastic bags. The team at Riverside is determined to get involved with a lot more of these projects to ensure they do their bit to keep the River clean and conserve their natural surroundings.
