| South Africa Prepares to Introduce Wind Power | |
Mapping of South Africa’s wind resources is the forerunner to building wind farms. One of the main obstacles to the growth of this technology is the lack of information about suitable sites for wind turbines.
The wind atlas project will be conducted jointed by the University of Cape Town, the Royal Danish National Wind Resource Institute, the South African National Energy Research Institute and the Department of Minerals and Energy. The research project will plot wind speeds and frequencies along the 3000km South African coastline. The first draft of the map is expected to be completed by 2010.This four year wind atlas research project is partly sponsored by the Danish government. On January 23 2009 the Danish government will host an international seminar in Pretoria to promote wind energy. Wind energy generates almost 20% of Demark’s electricity need. A further initiative to begin construction of a 100MW wind-energy farm at Koekenaap in the Western Cape later this year has been confirmed by Eskom this week. Two Danish companies Vestas and Suzlon are in the running for the bid to supply 50 turbines to the Koekenaap project. amplication effect is not just restricted to the ocean, Dr Stroeve said. These altered circulation patterns could then move the warmth over land areas.
