Super-Cute Electric Box on Wheels – the Boxx Scooter

The Boxx scooter is aptly named – it’s a box on wheels, handlebars above and wheels below. It almost doesn’t even look like it’s supposed to be ridden at all, but if you look closely you can see the footrests. The prototype made its debut at the Portland Auto Show in the Eco Center this weekend.

Pouring Water from the Air

For those facing water shortages, there is much to be thankful for when it comes to the inventive spirit. Thanks to young Australian inventor Edward Linacre, there may one day be no such thing as a water shortage for Australian farmers.

Green Roofs Pave the Way to Cheap Solar Power

Green Roofs Pave the Way to Cheap Solar Power

The combination of green roofs with rooftop solar panels can provide a quick and easy way to boost solar cell efficiency right now, making it more cost effective for property owners to invest in a rooftop solar installation without waiting for new technology breakthroughs to hit the market. Though at first glance it may seem that solar panels and vegetation don’t mix, the solar industry has been coming up with new rooftop infrastructures that enables greenery to thrive between the photovoltaic modules.

Capturing Sunlight in a Bulb to Eliminate Kerosene for Lighting

Capturing Sunlight in a Bulb to Eliminate Kerosene for Lighting

It is estimated that almost 1.6 billion people on this planet live without electricity. That means to have any kind of light in the darkness (12 hours of darkness in countries near the equator), toxic fuels such as kerosene are used to fuel lanterns for reading or cooking. While they provide much needed light, they also pollute habitats and endanger the health of those living inside.

WaveRoller Arrives in Portugal for Long Awaited Tests

The WaveRoller arrived on January 2nd at Portugal’s Peniche Shipyard for a much anticipated pilot test this summer off the coast of Portugal, one of the best testing sites in Europe for ocean energy. The scaled-up version for the pilot test is to be tested in the same waters near the sea shore of Peniche where its smaller prototype showed promise (Previous: WaveRoller Uses Swinging Door for Underwater Wave Energy.)

From the Designer of the iPod and iPhone Comes a New Energy-Saving ‘Learning Thermostat’

Think of a piece of classic design from the last decade. There’s a decent chance you thought of either the iPhone or the iPod, right? Apple’s ubiquitous gadgets have become so wildly popular, not in small part because of their attractive, smart design.

Why You Can’t Buy A Solar-Powered Cellphone… For Now

Why You Can’t Buy A Solar-Powered Cellphone… For Now

Cellphones. We all (well, most of us) have one, and we all charge them frequently. In fact, modern smartphones are so power-greedy many of us charge them every night. All this sucks up domestic (and sometimes, if we’re being cheeky, office) power.

Germans Trialing House that Produces Enough Spare Energy to Power a Car

If this doesn’t sound like a dream come true, I don’t know what does. The German government is testing a new design for a low-energy home packed with renewable energy generation systems, dubbed the Efficiency House Plus. If the design works as it should, it’ll not only produce enough electricity to meet all its own needs, but it’ll produce enough spare juice to charge a family car.
