| Plastic adrift in the Pacific Ocean | |
David de Rothschild, a British millionaire adventurer will embark on an expedition from San Francisco to Sydney to draw attention to a massive waste dump in the Pacific Ocean which is five times the size of the UK.
The expedition craft Plastiki made from old plastic mineral water bottles will be sailed by David de Rothschild and a five man crew. They will sail the 7 500 miles to Sydney along a course through the sea of plastic to draw attention to the pollution which is devastating marine life. As most plastic is not biodegradable, just about every piece ever made is somewhere on Earth. Researchers have estimated that out of approximately 100 tons produced each year, 10% ends up in the oceans. Due to the circular pattern of the sea currents the area of ocean known as the north Pacific gyre is used as a waste dump. Rothschild who is the founder of Adventure Ecology will set out from San Francisco on his 60ft raft in April this year.
