Jatropha cultivation causes conflict

Jatropha cultivation causes conflictLarge-scale cultivation of the Jatropha curcos bush, the seeds of which produce a high grade biodiesel, is causing policy problems in Kenya and Tanzania.

In both countries the governments are under pressure to reverse decisions made to allocate land for Jatropha cultivation, because Jatropha grows well in poor soil but allocations of land have been made in prime areas. This has led to demands for review from agricultural associations and environmental groups in both countries. In Mozambique large scale production has also been approved, but without the opposition seen in East Africa. The cultivation of Jatropha in South Africa is officially described as 'out'.
