| Arctic ice thins to record levels | |
|
The thickness of the ice was quite constant up until the winter of 2007 when it plummeted. Sea ice in the Arctic shrank to its smallest size on record in September 2007. The ice has thinned by an average of 10% below the 2002-8 average. The Western region of the Arctic showed the greatest impact where the ice had thinned up to 19%. Data of the measurements is gathered by satellite over a continuous period of time. Satellite data means that scientists are able to get coverage across the Arctic Ocean continuously so as to have coverage both in time and area. These findings are being used to assist climate modellers to refine their projects of what is going to happen in the future.

The average projection for the disappearance of the Arctic sea ice about 5 years ago was considered to be around the year 2080.
