Dear Sean, I was wondering if you might be interested in covering my environmental education charity Atlantic Rising. The project is setting up a network of schools in low lying communities around the Atlantic. To launch the network, the three directors of the charity, are travelling around the ocean on the 1meter contour line – this is predicted to be the new coastline in 100 years. We are visiting all the schools involved in our project, talking to the children about climate change and sea level rise and exploring the connections they might already have to their peers across the ocean. The aim is to encourage young people to appreciate how their lives might affect the planet. And through making friends with people who share the ocean realise their responsibilities to each other. We are also creating multimedia projects for teachers to use in classrooms to help explain climate change. You can have a look at the most recent one - a giant message in a bottle here. We are also talking to experts, researchers and local communities about the real effects climate change in the 31 countries we are visiting along the way. We are writing articles for various publications about how climate change is already affecting people all around the Atlantic. Sadly for funding issues we were not able to travel as far as South Africa and the African leg of our journey ended in Ghana. But the resources we are producing can be used in schools anywhere and we are always keen for more teachers to get involved. Like you we are always trying to spread the word so any publicity is always good. It would be great if you wanted to focus on us in an international news piece for the website. Or perhaps in your magazine? Please have a look at our website www.atlanticrising.org for some more information or if you have any questions I would be happy to answer them. We are also able to supply you with some photos if you wanted. Best wishes Lynn Morris |
